As I sit here ruminating about the past year I can’t help but feel incredibly proud of Digital District, the members, and the organization we’ve become. This time last year, Digital District was still a secret project being cobbled together over rail drinks and 50 cent tacos. Few knew of our plans to create an organization independent of Social Media Club and on January 1st, 2014, we proudly reveled a year’s worth of work and took our stand in the community as Digital District.
Our journey here was not easy.
Jumping into a new venture is terrifying and awesome at the same time, but with a great team in place, I knew we had something special. When we sat down to talk about the pros and cons of forming an independent organization, so many questions bubbled up, questions we simply didn’t have the answer to.
Could we make it on our own?
Only time would provide the answer. Through the triumphs and tribulations of Digital District’s first year I’m extremely excited to say: Yes. We can make it on our own and we’re getting stronger every day. 2015 is going to be a kick ass year for Digital District in DC and Beyond! (hint, hint…)
But before we jump into a new year, let’s reminisce on all the awesome things that happened in 2014.
2014: A Digital District Year In Review
Introducing Digital District! We laughed, we sang, but most importantly we shared drinks with good friends and long term supporters at our Digital District Launch party hosted by nclud.
Let us not forget the time we put on our lawyer pants and won a name battle with the DMPED. Will the real Digital District please stand up?
Now that we’re on our own, it’s all about the Benjamin’s. At our AppEcon panel we learned if you get your app users paid, made or laid you’re set. A special thanks to Chief for being a long time supporter and sponsor of Digital District.
In April we went back to school for our annual Career Success Fair hosted by GW SMPA.
How could we forget to mention we were acquired by Yahoo!. APRIL FOOLS. I can’t tell you how many of my relatives thought this was real.
Being great DCites Digital District took a stand on Net Neutrality. But more importantly we taught people what Net Neutrality actually is.
As your resident digital nerds we’re always here to answer the hard hitting questions, but this time we pitched one out to the audience. We’ve all been there, staring at the 120982039x Uber fee, toiling with whether or not to accept. I can walk from U Street to the hill at 2am in heels no problem right? Probably not. When you live beyond your means and ask the internet for help we asked, is social media diminishing our sense of personal responsibility? You decide.
2014 was an amazing year for Digital District. On behalf of myself and the rest of the Digital District team I’d like to thank you for your undying support and for being a part of our digital family. We absolutely can’t wait to show you what we’ve been planning for 2015!
If you are interested in getting involved with Digital District for 2015, please drop us a note. We’re always looking for new members, sponsors, partners, guest bloggers and more!
Cheers and Happy New Year!
