Digital District Demanded Success and Liked It

Digital District demands success! (No really, we do.) So it’s always cool when we can connect with companies and organizations who are doing great things in the industry. For the past twelve years, Vocus has been putting on the Demand Success conference, but until two years ago, non-customers weren’t invited. Lucky for us, last year, Vocus opened the doors of Demand Success to everyone (and we’re so glad they did).

This year , and from the Digital District Board trekked out to National Harbor for Demand Success. We listened, we tweeted, we selfied, and we had a blast. But most importantly we made new friends and we learned a ton! For those of you who weren’t able to join us, here are a few of the major themes from the conference.

Don’t Be THAT Person on Social Media

nailed it with her list of social media pet peeves. We all know THAT person who is beyond annoying on social or maybe they just don’t get it. At the top of her list was users who #blessed everything. As she correctly identified, these people are really just disguising their humble brag. But let’s be honest, no one is buying it.

And then there was my personal favorite, and probably the best slide of all Demand Success, the old person who just doesn’t get it. We’ve all been there. But this Facebook interaction is everything.

We’re all Publishers Now

This isn’t particularly shocking news, but incase you didn’t realize, social media makes it incredibly easy to self publish and promote content. In essence, we’re all publishers and mini media companies now.

Now that we have the power, we must use it wisely.

User generated content is set to be the next wave of social media marketing. Brands don’t sell products anymore, people do. The more you can leverage your audience toward becoming brand ambassadors, the easier your job as a marketer becomes.

Thanks to social media, we have all the information we need to target and micro target our customers, but are you leveraging it to your advantage?

Content Shock is Real

Now that we’ve established we’re all media companies, we’re all going to produce and publish a ton of content, right? Right. Essentially we made our own jobs harder by producing too much content creating content shock for our consumers. Too much content. BOOM.

Stop working against yourself and go where the conversations are already happening instead of generating new ones. Forums and blog comment streams are a great place to interact and join in without adding to the content boom.

The Shittiest Metric in the World is the Facebook Like

As stated by of Google, vanity metrics might make your boss or client feel like progress is being made but a like on Facebook essentially means nothing. As social media marketers, we need to do a better job of measuring our impact and providing ROI. Dig deeper into google analytics and make a push for that listening software. Whatever you do, stop hiding behind your army of 100,000 likes, 90% of whom are teenage girls from Indonesia.

We Demand Selfies

It wouldn’t have been a marketing and PR conference without a bunch of selfies mixed in. Digital District members past and present had a blast. Thanks again,
